FACT: Property owners can renovate, paint, or alter their homes as usual. Restrictions only apply if you choose to use federal funding or specific historic tax incentives for the project .
MYTH: I must follow strict design rules.
FACT: There is no design review created by National Register listing alone. You only need to follow specific design criteria if you actively apply for federal grants or tax credits.
MYTH: Historic designation will reduce my property values.
FACT: Research shows that historic designation generally stabilizes or increases property values by preserving neighborhood character and boosting desirability. See our Economic Impact page for more information.

FACT: Your property remains strictly private; you are never required to allow public access to your yard or home.
